Hargeisa(QARAN)-The United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Dr.Jendayi Frazer today paid a visit to Somaliland to hold discussions with President Dahir Rayale Kahin and senior members of the Somaliland parliament.Dr.Frazer's visit comes after a the United States played host to a delegation from Somaliland led by President Rayale in January of this year. Dr.Frazer was given an official reception at the Somaliland presidency in Hargeisa where she held informal talks with the President Rayale, the leaders of Somaliland's three political parties, members of the House of Elder and the House of Representatives, and senior government ministers..Speaking to the press upon her arrival in Hargeisa, Dr. Frazer stated" I would first all like to congratulate the Republic of Somaliland on its democratic and security developments". Dr. Frazer also indicated her visit to Somaliland will further strengthen the friendship and co-operation between the United States and Somaliland.Dr.Frazer also stated that the United States will support the upcoming elections in Somaliland.

Remarking on the issue of Somaliland's international recognition, Dr.Frazer stated that the United States is encouraging the African Union to make headway on this issue, and is following the process closely.This is the most senior delegation from the United States to visit Somaliland, since the country reclaimed its sovereignty on 18th of May, 1991.
Prior to Dr.Frazer's visit, the United States Ambassador to Ethiopia, Mr.Donald Yamamoto was in Hargeisa yesterday to lay the framework for the Assistant State Secretary's visit to Somaliland.
According to sources close to the Presidency, the talks between the Somaliland government and its United States counterparts included the issues of economic, security and democratic relationship between the two countries, and also exploring the possibility of the United States representation in Somaliland.
It is expected that this historic visit will be start of extensive engagements between Somaliland and the United States of America.
